The Expanded Tour at
The Butterfly Farm:
Celebrating 25 years of evolution through the butterfly.
The Butterfly Farm
(TBF) pioneered the exhibition of live butterflies
in Costa Rica.
As a world-leading supplier of butterfly pupae, the
farm opened its doors to the public to share in the
knowledge of this most cherished insect.
In 2009 the farm introduced the Gallery for Human
Transformation.
The gallery integrates
the symbolic andmythologicalmeanings
of the butterfly within the context of scientific
and environmental understandingss being freshly roasted
in small batches.

The
Butterfly Farm Tour
In an enclosed tropical garden, the life
cycle of the butterfly is explored. Among hundreds of free-flying
butterflies feeding on the nectar of flowers and fruits, mating,
and laying eggs on their host-plants, guides interpret the
butterfly’s natural history.
Opportunities abound to witness
the magical process of the caterpillar changing into its chrysalis
and subsequently metamorphosing into a butterfly; a mesmerizing
on-site experience.
From biology and ecology the tour delves into the symbolic
and mythological meaning of the butterfly, one understood
by previous civilizations and by today's cultures still living
in harmony with nature. In The Butterfly Farm tour, science
meets the heart of nature in hopes of fostering true stewardship
of our planet.

Visitors are also shown the
process of exporting chrysalises to butterfly houses worldwide
and learn about the widespread attraction for these flying
beauties.
The Gallery
for Human Transformation
The relationship of humans with the butterfly
has forever been filled with subtle significance. Freedom,
love, peace, hope, beauty, and metamorphosis are some of the
resonances repeatedly voiced. In the butterfly’s metamorphosis
is found a symbolic correspondence for human transformation,
from limited larval beings to becoming free beautiful adults.
The Gallery for Human Transformation traces the symbolism
of the butterfly across the globe and throughout time, from
the ancient Greeks and the Pre-Columbian peoples of Costa
Rica to today’s worldwide popularity of butterfly exhibits.
Visitors at The Butterfly
Farm are invited to traverse continents and pierce through
time on the wings of the butterfly to explore the human journey.

The Perfect Combination®
Costa Rica is world renowned as much for the exuberance of
its butterflies as for its gourmet coffee. It is no mystery,
therefore, why two of Costa Rica’s most popular destinations
are The Butterfly Farm and the Coffee tour de Café Britt.
The tour starts early as participants
are picked up at San Jose’s leading hotels.
Once at The Butterfly Farm in La Guácima, guests are escorted
through a tropical garden where the magic of free-flying butterflies,
art and myth converge with natural history. Afterwards, the
journey continues to Britt’s farm in Heredia. This multimedia
presentation highlights coffee’s history in Costa Rica and
around the world, and the evolution of the golden bean from
the plantation to your cup!
Expert coffee tasters will share their knowledge of the arts
and science of gourmet coffee appreciation.

BUTTERFLY AND ORQUIDS
For those with aesthetic sensibilities,
you won’t want to miss the beauty!
The day begins with a hotel
pick up and trip to The Butterfly Farm in the rural community
of La Guácima.
After a total immersion experience in the butterflies, it’s
a short drive to the Botanical Orchid Garden. Visitors will
be shown through nurseries, a lower showroom, garden trails,
water gardens and more. By the end visitors will have learned
to distinguish among the different stages that orchids pass
through, the extreme flower variation, how to take care of
them and much more. A delicious lunch is served at the Vanilla
Café, the garden’s well-regarded restaurant.
Participants should be heading
back to their hotel by around 1:30 p.m.

La Guácima Butterfly
Murals - A unique destination for the artistically minded

|
Under the auspices of The Butterfly
Farm, 42 butterfly-themed murals adorn the town of
La Guácima. The murals grace the exteriors
of private homes and businesses throughout the community.
In 2005 the Municipality of Alajuela officially designated
La Guácima as
“La Comunidad de las Mariposas” and church leaders
adopted the
butterfly as the town symbol.
La Guácima’s murals, free-flying butterflies
and tropical home
gardens make a fascinating and unique destination
for artists, photographers and all creative-minded
individuals.

a mural with the German
muralist, Wendy Bell, as part of a sister city exchange
between
La Guácima and Sayn, Germany.

mural, The Act of Metamorphosis.
One interpretation might suggest
that the adult butterfly
represents the final stage in our psychological evolution.
